When it comes to wood flooring, you might think appearance is all about species. However, when trees are cut, the lumber is graded according to the number of knots, color variations, and patterns.

That gives each species a different look. Next, you need to determine what style you want. That means exploring grades.

Prime and select, with few or no knots, and rustic.

About character grade

Character is a combination of all the grades. It's characterized by larger knots, color variations, holes, and other millwork.

The most common character grades are white/red oak and black walnut. In addition, character grade is available in engineered and solid hardwood flooring.

White oak and black walnut: two familiar character grades

White oak has an open grain and color variations that range from light gray to beige and brown. The species has a rich grain and can look slightly distressed. It's versatile enough for any decor.

Black walnut has an opulent look, with a dark, rich chocolate color and grains that range from open to almost closed. The grain pattern is straight with some curling. It makes a stunning design statement!

The open and closed grains are due to black walnut growing in many different areas. To learn more, come to our hardwood flooring company.
